BT Do It Again

Last year I wrote about BT taking me for a ride, where they plain and simply failed.

Well yesterday Mandy got home and noticed two BT engineers at the top of the telegraph pole outside our house. After going inside they came to the house and said (and I’m not kidding here)

"Are you having a phone line installed?"

You would have thought they would know! Anyway, after Mandy explained that we had already got a phone line installed, and that we certainly didn’t want another one, they insisted that it was our house. Mandy, standing her ground, said that we had one installed a year ago and certainly didn’t want another as that had cost £125 and has probably gone up by now. So they went back to their van, got a bunch of bits of paper together and went into the following conversation with each other.

BT Guy 1 "what number was it again?"
BT Guy 2 (Sifting papers) "where is the sheet with the number on it?"
BT Guy 1 "It’s that sheet there."
BT Guy 2 (Pauses) "Which one?"
BT Guy 1 (Points) "That one."
BT Guy 2 (Sifts papers about) "This one?"
BT Guy 1 (Points) "No, the bottom of that one."
BT Guy 2 (Picks up paper) "Oh…"
BT Guy 1 (Look at paper) "Oh, maybe it’s not this bit…"

This went on for about 5 minutes until they came to the blinding conclusion that it wasn’t our house they wanted, but one down the street!

Is it just coincidence that BT come to our house and try to install a phone line about a year to the day that they did it in the first place? Probably, but it is just another fiasco in a long running multitude of fiascos. Sort yourselves out BT!

That Sign Doesn’t Say What You Think It Says

Take a look at this sign. It might not look like much, but the Welsh section actually reads “I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated.”.

The English is clear enough, but no one can read the Welsh bit.

The English is clear enough, but no one can read the Welsh bit.

What happened was that Swansea council sent the English text off to get translated into Welsh due to the legal requirement to have everything in Welsh and English. The proportion of people that speak Welsh in Swansea is very low (about 7%), but the legal requirement still stands. All Welsh councils have an in house translation service, which is always very, very busy (to which I have experience). So the Swansea council worker figured out the English and needing the translation, sent this off to the translation department. However, the worker there had put an automated reply on their email which sent back a response saying “I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated.”, but only in Welsh. Not understanding Welsh the council worker copied this and it was made into the sign.

The thing is, you have to wonder about how many people saw this text whilst it was being made into a sign. Supposing that this is the fault of the transport department I figure that these are the steps involved.

  • Transport worker creates text and sends it off to get translated into Welsh. This would be just a single person entering the English text.
  • The “translation” is sent back (as far as this worker is concerned).
  • The Transport worker sends this onto the people making the sign. This would involve another person from the sign makers looking at the text.
  • The people making the sign take this text and run it through their manufacturing process. This would include the design, printing and creation of the sign. Assuming that Swansea council do all this in house there would still be 10-20 people about who would have read the text or the sign at some point.
  • The sign gets sent back to the Transport office. This would probably get quality checked by the Transport office, so another couple of people would see it.
  • Workers at the Transport office arrange to get the sign placed on the street.
  • The sign is taken to the designated position by a road works lorry and put in place. This might involve 2-3 guys who would have to dig the whole, put the poles in and put up the sign.

So just in making a sign there would probably be at least 30 people who would have seen this sign and read the text. At no point in this process did anyone say “this doesn’t say what you think it says” because none of them could speak a word of Welsh.

I wonder what the was point of translating it in the first place?

Stop Sharia Law In The UK

Watch this quick video:

Sign the Petition to stop Sharia Law from being binding in law under arbitration tribunals rules.

See the original video.

In my opinion our government seems obsessed with not offending anyone. This just means that they bend over backwards to allow all sorts of crazy things to go on because someone happens to think that it is the truth. This is plain and simply a violation of human rights, which the UK should be dedicated to stopping!

Of course, if the government were to stop this you can be sure that the Sharia following people would say that the government were oppressing their religion and waging a war against islam. So our government just go for the easy option.

Does anybody out there have a government with a backbone?

Worst. Recruitment Agent. Ever.

Today I was phoned by quite possibly the worst recruitment agent ever.

I don’t deal directly with recruitment. My job is to assess the need of an extra member of staff on my team, pick the people I want to see based on their CV, do the interviews, and then pick the person I think is best suited for the position. Everything else (which is admittedly a lot) is done by the very excellent HR (Human Resources) team so I don’t normally deal with recruitment agencies.

The girl on reception knows exactly what cold calling is and is fully prepared to say that I’m in a meeting or something. However, I decided to talk to this guy as I haven’t heard of the company before and thought I would just inform them that HR are the people to deal with. This is only polite and saves them from wasting time asking for me in the future.

I’m not going to say the name of the agency, or the agent, but this guy just seemed to phone up with the sole purpose of insulting people. After his initial pitch I understood that he was with an agency and said that I didn’t deal with recruitment agencies directly and that he would have better luck talking to HR. However, he came out with the following sentence, which he said in his most condescending manner.

Oh, I thought that you being Lead Developer of Research and Development, you would be involved in recruitment.

I was so tempted to put the phone down the the guy without even saying goodbye. I just told him that I would transfer him over to HR who would be able to help him. Transferred the call, and hung up.

Speaking to HR later on I learned that this guy had just flat-out lied to them. He said that he had been in contact with me for years, well before my time at Just Search. I have never heard this guys name before, or even his company’s name so that clearly wasn’t true. Not only that, but if he did know me, he should have at least asked me how I was. Aside from being impolite, I really don’t like people who lie, so I think it is safe to say that we won’t be dealing with them any more!

He had probably just picked my name and job title up from one of my social networking sites (eg. LinkedIn) and tried his luck. Part of me thinks that it must be some kind of crank call.
